Primary 5: Aiming PSLE
As students enter Primary-5, we continue strengthening their English language skills, but with an eye on acing PSLE in the foreseeable future. Our aim is to guide students to aspire towards achieving the standards expected to score well in PSLE:
- Grammar: We keep building on a solid grammatical foundation. Complex grammatical topics are reinforced and students are exposed to more challenging and exam-oriented question patterns.
- Vocabulary: We continue working on expanding our students’ repertoire of words and their usage in writing. We teach children to work with words, using them in the most appropriate form in their writing as well as exercises such as Synthesis & Transformation.
- Reading and Visual Comprehension: We bear in mind the standards set by the MOE while drafting the Reading-Comprehension and Visual-Comprehension exercises. The focus is on honing comprehension and analytical skills
- Composition Writing: We work on adding depth and complexity in the Compositions. Using the ‘Tool Kit’ to plan what to write and how to write, we work at making compositions more descriptive (show, not tell) filled with more action points, building the climax and stating a well-developed conclusion. There is continuous emphasis on choice of words and expressions.
- Situational Writing: Another writing task that gets introduced in Primary-5 is called the Situational Writing Task. The students are taught the correct format, purpose and writing style of a Situational Writing task.
- Listening Comprehension and Oral Exam Practice: Our study material incorporates Oral and Listening exercises in each study module. This makes the child practise the oral tasks as regularly as any grammar or vocabulary task. Since the oral exercise is part of the given module, the child organically learns the vocabulary to use while speaking, thereby building confidence and fluency.
